Major Major

“Major Major,” now an increasingly popular coinage among Filipinos thanks to Miss Philippines and Ms Universe 2010 4th Runner Up Ma. Venus Raj, is a case of first language interference in Philippine English. Repeating a word to intensify its meaning is one of the internal processes in most Philippine languages, e.g. “bonggang bongga,” “saya-saya,” “tuwang-tuwa,”. This must have prompted Raj to say the word “major” twice to achieve that semantic effect, as she responded to the crucial question at the pageant. While it is clear it cost her the crown, she represented our country very well up to the last minute and remained true to her national identity. And that makes a real beauty!

This might be a late comment about this major major thing..but im so happy that MAJORity of filipinos are still proud of her (just like you)…coz ive heard some negative comment about her answer..me, myself that is also one of my deficiency i cant express myself very well in english both oral and verbal, to think that i am teaching…maybe because we are not a graduate from prestigious school and we are not using english language everyday both in school and at home…but at least we tried to do our best to deliver our message…(hala nosebleed at gingivitis na ako..hahaha)

Nice diba!hehehe! :D

honestly, i am so terrified to speak english confidently and it is true that we can write good and sometimes speak well but the problem is lies in our environment. we tend to talked or speak english at school but when we reach home, we speak again our dialect. how can we then be so fluent? in america, it is easy to adapt the language for most of the people i work with and you are surrounded mostly by english speaking community. i hope to be as fluent as anybody who just migrated here.
